Is it possible to live and love when everybody has been killed? Just as we today commonly add the note “P.S.” (Post scriptum) to our correspondence, an on the whole insignificant term Post bellum was in use after the war between Prussia and Austria in 1866 – as an extra specification of the status of those who had fought in that war and outlived their comrades ... Thus starts the story of a young officer of the Austrian Army, Paul von Heber, who has survived the Battle of Hradec Králové and has been decorated by the Emperor himself, but now looks in vain for a reason to continue living in a world gone wild. Will he find it in army service? Or in his love for the young seamstress Adela?
