A glorious summer day, perfect for bathing, going on a hike, picking wild mushrooms in the forest … And angling, too. Captain Vašátko and his friend Horác set out for a country cottage, to enjoy their hard-earned holidays. They are looking forward to spending a full fortnight sitting on the lake bank, keeping silent and angling. Twenty-five-year-old driver Dan Pašolt is stopped on the outskirts of Prague by a girl thumbing a lift to Vodňany (a town in South Bohemia) . The next day Dan is detained by the police and remanded into custody – the hitchhiking girl has been found dead at Písek, a town before her destination. No-one has any doubts as to the murderer – except for Captain Vašátko, who resents jumping at conclusions and wants at least to try to prove Dan´s innocence. He untangles the complicated history of Dan and the dead girl, identified as Milena Stárková, and gradually puts together the mosaic of their pseudo-friends and colleagues. Who had reasons to get rid of her, about whom did she know too much, and therefore had to die? Did she really let Dan drop her before they reached Vodňany? Why and on whom did she want to take revenge – if she intended to take it at all?
