Catalogue of Czech Television Programmes
A documentary film about a case of property restitution that presents a very typical story of the Czech political-social atmosphere of recent years. Baron Schebek was a prominent builder of railway-lines during Austro-Hungarian times, thus acquiring a large fortune and a nobleman’s title. But then came the communist coup in 1948, and the family lost all their property, acknowledgement of their merits and some members even their homeland. After the revolution of 1989, their property was returned under the Restitution Act, but forty years of state administration had played havoc with it. Among the real estate returned to the family was the mansion in Zruč nad Sázavou; long and complicated negotiations with the local authorities followed as to its further fate, until finally the owners sold it to the municipality for a fraction of its value.
