THE BATTLE FOR LIFE

Bitva o život

A fascinating look at the colorful life of a community which in defiance of difficult circumstances lives life to the fullest. The village of Bystré is situated in a former textile region which is currently in deep crisis—unemployment in certain places has reached over 20% and young people are moving elsewhere. Those who remain, however, carry on managing to enjoy themselves, while slowly the border between reality and carnival becomes more and more blurred. The reenactment of a battle from the Second World War, a witch burning, drinking during the harvest, and New Year’s Eve in a pub—all contribute to the creation of a new and varied folklore for the coming millennium in which figures from the Bible, history and television are blended together. Thanks to the original camerawork and an exceptional sense of the uncommon, the film’s three directors - each emloying a distinctive style - successfully captured the atmosphere of the location and the magic of the events.
