A story set in contemporary times is about friendship and loneliness, hope and disappointment and about a secret whose roots lie in a medieval legend. Twelve-year-old Johana has lived alone with her father since her mother's death. They both suffer greatly from their loss; Johana misses her mother's special love and her father misses a companion for the practical side of life. Father decides that they will spend their summer holidays apart, he with his secret new girlfriend, and Johana with her uncle. The local children soon accept her, especially Jirda, and she also befriends a mysterious elderly man who searches for the source of the mysterious forces involving them all.
