This political thriller uses black humor to describe the workings of a totalitarian state. František, a waiter in an ordinary pub, happens to help out at an important governmental reception. The political world fascinates him and he manages to penetrate to the highest levels, first as a mere observer, but later as an active participant. Disgusted by what he discovers, František decides to put an end to his new 'career' by playing a practical joke. But the totalitarian system, grotesquely funny in itself, has no sense of humor. František is found out and cannot be allowed to escape. He will either be eliminated or convinced to truly collaborate.
