This film is a post-modern vision of Franz Kafka's unfinished novel Amerika. Early in the 20th century a young Czech, Karel Rossmann, travels to America, a country famous for dreamlike successes and equally fantastic failures. Rossmann's uncle is the richest man in the United States and receives his nephew as if he was his own son, but expects Karel's absolute obedience and devotion to his company. When Karel does not stand the test, his uncle renounces him. Experience shows the young European a different America from the one he had dreamed of at home, but there is hope...
