RETURNING IN AUTUMN

Podzimní návrat

A Greek director named Stavros comes to the town of Brno in the Czech Republic in order to take his grandparents remains back to their beloved Greece. It was there in Brno (in then Czechoslovakia) that he lived much of his life. He was in fact one of more than three thousand Greek children who in May 1948 were taken to Czechoslovakia as refugees from the civil war then raging in Greece. The heros return to a place so intimately known to him brings back intense memories of his childhood: at first he lived in a childrens home and then with grandparents who, after being forced to emigrate, died in Czechoslovakia. This powerful story is a portrait not only of a boys maturation (in which school, friends, and first love take the leading roles), but is also the young Greeks first realization of his difference from others, given that he was raised in a foreign land and only returned to Greece as an adult. The humorous, touching, and even odd incidents which Stavros recalls upon encountering well-known places also serve as a potent evocation of Czechoslovakia in the 1950s.
