Raconteur Zdenek Mahler tells us about the life and work of Gustav Mahler, the composer. The film features archive material as well as new sequences. In the history of music it would be difficult to find an artist whose start evoked such shrill opposition, whose work was attacked and criticized with such pronounced passion. Gustav Mahler actually tried to present his compositions to the public at his own costs. He was called a charlatan and trickster, ridiculed as a shameless fool – his work was disparaged as an effort to smuggle dirt into the world of beauty. Nowadays we can find many books lauding his work. The composer is speculated on in Europe, America and Japan. World conductors and top orchestras consider it an honour to present his compositions.
