This story, set in the present, concerns11-year-old Markéta's problems with her mother's suitors. Markéta and her mother live alone because her father left when she was just a baby. Markéta can't forget about him, however, and so her mother puts an advertisement in the paper in search of a father – and a husband. But Markéta doesn't like any of the candidates, imagining them instead as a penguin, hippopotamus, monkey or any other zoo animal.
